There is strong talk against Terri McMillan's EX. What are your thoughts on his writing a book? Some book stores refuse to sell it.

I've heard the same thing. I've also heard that Terry McMillan is really upset about it and has basically sent emails to various radio show hosts and literary sources blasting the publishing company and anyone responsible for helping the book get published.

She also blasted books that basically are trashy...like Diary of a Video Vixen and other books of that nature because she basically felt like these types of books are exploitive and plainly put...garbage. She also suggested that some publishing companies are basically more interested in making a quick buck instead of publishing books of substance.

I would have to agree with her. Everytime you turn around you see yet another book out about who they had in bed and other things that I particularly wouldn't waste my money on but for whatever reason books like these sell. I think anyone that can write about who they slept with and make a buck off of it is no better than a women making money on the street corner. It's the same as prostitution to me. But now she's actually getting the last laugh because now she's pimping everyone that's buying the book! Crazy!!

Terry McMillan Speaks Out About African American Books
Current mood: grateful
Category: Writing and Poetry

I found this today in my email from a book club. Don't know if it is true but it bears reading, especially for anyone who wants to write a book but thinks that strippers, drug deals and murders are your ticket to fame. In my first book, I asked how many things like that can people write about. Then when you stop to look at even the music born of this kind of thought (50 cents) versus somebody talking about something different (Kanye West) you'll understand my point. With that said, here's Terry:

Subject: Emailing: RAY-J Tell All Memoir 'Sex Machine' in the Works - Black Voices Blogs

The three of you, along with the other publishing houses who have been kind enough to add "special" urban/ghetto imprints are all about to see a major shift in your ongoing and relentless publication of exploitative, destructive, racist, egregious, sexist, base, tacky, poorly-written, unedited, degrading books. Like a number of Black bookstores who are starting to refuse to sell this trash, I, along with other Black literary organizations, supporters, book clubs as well as writers are about to make our opinions known, to aid in making clear to the public just how demeaning these books are and what it means to our community.

It is sad that it took years of selling trashy sexually-driven as well as tell-alls before so-called black writers were ever allowed in the Big Publishing House's Little Rooms enough to FINALLY get our own imprints. Why hasn't Walter Mosley or Edwidge Dandicat or Barak Obama or Terry McMillan or Jamaica Kincaid among others ever offered our very own imprints, I wonder?

I've heard that Simon & Schuster has even gotten some of its authors out of jail just to go on a book tour. Karen, you should be ashamed of yourself, but like Jonathan, I can tell that you (along with your sister-in-law Wendy Williams) are all cut from the same cloth. You care nothing about pride as a Black woman or you wouldn't align yourself or even put your name on some of the ugliest words and stories possible.

You are an embarrassment and for someone going around bragging about being a Pulitizer Prize winner (which I understand you are not, that you were associated with other writers at the Daily News who actually deserved it) you should be ashamed of yourself for relying on such a prestigious literary prize to co-write some of the despicable and outrageously base books that you can. I find it sad indeed when a Black woman of your so-called reputation was willing to help my ex-husband write a tell-all describing "the juicy details" about our so-called relationship.

You know he is a liar and a thief and that he played me and you didn't care. As long as you got paid, and this is precisely why no one (last week I understand according to Book Scan a whopping 600 copies had sold nationwide, and only 87 on the entire west coast) is buying it. Karinne Superhead's book is tanking just like Balancing Act, and RJ's book is not going to fly either.

This is the beginning of a brand new trend, so be prepared for it. Years ago white folks bought us and worked us as slaves. You're doing the same exact thing. The only problem is that back then we didn't go willingly. Malcolm X and Dr. King and Rosa Parks, among others, didn't fight for us to get to This, and this is precisely why you are beginning to see a lack of support for these disgusting books.

So Karen Hunter, you can put your name on them if you want to, and you along with Louise and Carolyn have already been reading on Black Voices (among others) what they have to say about Simon & Schuster (but they're referring to all of the Houses with these ghetto imprints) among other sites, how people are getting fed up with these books, even the "reluctant readers" are bored with who's having sex with whom and degrading tell-alls that show black people in a negative and stereotypical light, have no respect for these type of books, for you Karen Hunter ("run the other way when you see her name") and you have already seen the beginning of downward spiral in your sales department, I' sure. It' going to continue, because with all things exploitative, the reign always comes to a halt.

Jonathan' reign of terror is. And the publishing industry' exploitative role in all of this is too. And Karen, there are only so many scandals out there, and people are getting tired of reading about other's sex lives. Why don't you write about yours. Give 'em something to talk about.

Sincerely,

Terry McMillan

I've read the book. And I saw none of the juicy details she describes. I did not see this as a book about him and her...i honestly didn't. So I am curious to know what details she is referring to. I don't think he put anymore truth in this book than she has put into any of hers. I actually found it to be a pretty entertaining read and it wasn't a biography. I read it for what it was...entertainment. I think that Terri brings more attention to the book by blasting it. Those blasts give Plummer more sales cuz folks think the book is about her.

I was prepared not to like it. I was plesantly surprised. I think that Terri will make more of a statement by coming out with another best-seller.

So do you think she's still bitter and just don't want to see her ex do well? I think you're definitely right about drawing more attention to his book. The email that was written by her was tame compared to how she comes across in person. She's truly one of a kind.

I honestly believe she just does not want him to do well. Blasting another author is a personal attack and will NOT get her marriage back, but she can regain her dignity by being graceful and letting it go. At LEAST in public. When I went through my divorce, I had a period of mourning and then I got up and decided that I wasn't going to let ANYONE see me miserable. I wasn't worried about getting back at HIM because it was doing nothing for ME. All of the anger that she is pouring into him is just too much effort. It is a waste of time and energy, This man is going to live his life no matter what. It is time for Terri to live hers and focus on her own career. She was once seen as one of the most talented authors around...but she's going to mess around and allow her bitterness to seep into her writing and it is going to be a very hard read. It is time for her to stop drawing attention to HIM and regain her own spotlight on the merit of her body of WORK and not on what her EX is doing.

KARMA works both ways.

You are so correct on everything you've said. It will be interesting what she'll say next year at the NBCC. She spoke briefly about her divorce last year so I'll be interested to see what she'll say next year.
